Croatia today

Kolinda Grabar-Kitaroviæ, Minister of foreign affairs and european integration (2006)
Five Stars Croatia Issue 1 — April 01, 2006.

Croatia today is a vibrant and progressive nation - a nation that embraces democracy, freedom, and the community of nations to which she belongs. The Croatia of the 21st century is a country of stability, tolerance, opportunity, culture and natural beauty.

My nation's rich and often challenging history, has served as an impetus for reforms that are already beginning to enrich the lives of all our citizens. As a responsible member of the international community which contributes to the processes of democratisation, security and stability at regional and global levels, Croatia has set for herself a determined course towards greater Euro-Atlantic integration.

The commencement of EU accession negotiations in October 2005 initiated the final stage of our rapprochement to the European Union. For Croatia, membership in the European Union is not only about ameliorating the lives of our people, or of building a modern, knowledge-based economy, but about sharing our common history, art, science, and the values which we live by, with other Europeans. It is also about helping to complete the bridge between central Europe and the Mediterranean.

Croatia's foreign policy goals also include the pursuit of NATO membership, and non-permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council in 2008-2009. These goals stem from our desire to assume our share of responsibility in strengthening global security. We are confident that the experience gained in the defence of our country offers Croatia a unique perspective - a perspective which can be beneficial to resolving post conflict situations around the globe while helping to promote international peace and security, in partnership with the international community.

Croatia has undertaken efforts to assist neighbouring countries in their pursuit of the Euro-Atlantic dream. We have assumed a leadership role in our region and we are actively engaged in promoting good neighbourly relations.

It is as a result of our efforts internationally and regionally, that the quality of life in Croatia is rapidly improving and leading others in the region. Croatia offers its residents and visitors security, preserved natural beauties, vast cultural and artistic heritage and excellent cuisine.

Croatia's friendly people are our nation's best Ambassadors. They take pride in the accomplishments of our nation and its natural beauty. While my role as Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration is to tell the world about Croatia, it is the Croatian people who will help you learn to love it as much as I do.

So whether you have just arrived, just returned or just passing through, whether you are savouring Istrian wine and white truffles, indulging in the sea air of Dalmatia, hiking in the mountains of Gorski Kotar or Lika, relaxing at a wellness centre in Zagorje, touring Slavonia or sipping espresso in Zagreb, enjoy Croatia and all that we have to offer. I am certain you will not be disappointed with the Croatia of the 21st century!
