Goethe Institut Inter Nationes in Zagreb is one of presently existing 131 German cultural institutions in the world and was founded in 1972. It consists of a library - and information center, a department to promote the German language in Croatia and a department for cultural programs. The information system offers overall about 10.000 books, magazines, videos and music CDs designated for lending. Apart from that, there are programs of the Information Center for the fields of literature and library.
Promotion of German language involves all school and university institutions of Croatia, where one can learn German. German language teachers are trained in didactic adult courses, latest teaching materials are presented and scholarships for a stay in Germany are offered. In 2002, there were 210 events of that kind for German language teachers.
Our cultural programs have the intention to offer incentives for Croatian and German experts, scientists and artists for joint projects, to exchange their experience and to give incentives for an international cultural co-operation. Last year, there were overall 81 events in the fields of literature, music, film, media, theater and exhibitions. More than 28.000 persons visited these events.
The activities of the Goethe Institut Inter Nations are not limited only to the capital of Zagreb – all larger Croatian cities may participate in the programs, whereby we need to have partners from our host country who identify themselves with our common goals and support our work. The activities of the Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes have reference to the specific situation of the host country, to its present, social and cultural position, its starting point and its concrete requirements for contacts to Germany. The goal is an open, critical and equal dialogue with the representatives of various cultures.
Dr. Rudolf Bartsch, Director of Goethe Institut Inter Nationes
