What are the two oldest parts of contemporary Zagreb?
On the territory of today’s Zagreb there existed in the 12th century the canonical settlement Kaptol and the Craftsman’s Square and fortified settlement Gradec (today’s Upper City), which was in 1242 declared a free king’s city by the Golden Bull of King Bela IV. The constant conflicts of Kaptol and Gradec date from the 13th century but both settlements are united in the 16th century under the name of Zagreb.
