Who is Josip Jelačić?

The Croatian Count Josip Jelačić (1801-59) was appointed Viceroy of the kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia & Slavonia. He abolished serfdom (1848). He went to war against the Hungarians (October 1848), which Vienna used as a war of Austria against the Hungarian revolution. As an official of Austria he took part in the suppression of Vienna’s October Revolution after which he lost his good reputation among the people and became impotent towards the national movement. His renewed commands on the proclamation of the octroyed Austrian Constitution (1849) that meant the revocation of all achieved human rights and freedoms remain in Croatia unexecuted.
