Croatian lighthouses - Alone in the big blue

Do you sometimes wish to get away from it all? Far away from everyone, from work, crowds, civilisation, and far away from your usual rhythm of life? Do you sometimes wish to be someone else and live some place else, with different concerns, horizons, feelings and scents around you?

Do you wish to be in a place which will direct you to your inner self, and to your loved ones...?

Well, you should make your wishes come true, and let the lighthouse be your beacon. Croatia has about fifty lighthouses, eleven of which have been adapted for you, lovers of solitude and Robinson tourism. So, here they are:

Palagruža, a lighthouse situated on the most distant Croatian island of Palagruža, 123 km from the town of Split and 42 km south of the island of Lastovo. If you are travelling by car, head for the city of Split, then take the ferry to Vela Luka on the island of Korčula, where you will again drive to the town of Korčula. Finally, take a boat to the island of Palagruža. The lighthouse was built in 1875 on an island which is 1,400 m long, 300 m wide and rising 90 m above sea level, representing the biggest island of the Palagruža archipelago. On the island of Palagruža there is also an archaeological site. The island is a nature reserve with endemic vegetation and animal species, and the surrounding sea is rich in fish. There is a permanent lighthouse keeper living on the island.

Pločica, a lighthouse situated on the small island of Pločica between the island of Hvar, the island of Korčula and the peninsula of Pelješac, 7 km from Prigradica and 20 km from Vela Luka. It was built in 1887. If you are travelling by car, head for the city of Split, then take the ferry to the island of Korčula. There, drive to Prigradica and take a boat to the islet. The islet does not rise far above sea level and has a fascinating seabed for diving. The lighthouse is completely automatic, so there is no lighthouse keeper there.

Struga, a lighthouse situated on the island of Lastovo, 100 km south of the city of Split and 100 km west of the city of Dubrovnik. If you are travelling by car, head for Split, take a ferry to Uble on the island of Lastovo, and continue by car all the way to the lighthouse. This lighthouse was constructed 70 m above sea level back in 1839. The island of Lastovo is surrounded by numerous islets and lagoons. Near the lighthouse there is a hundred-year-old pine forest and the surrounding sea is especially rich and clear and abounds in prize crustacean specimens and corals. The lighthouse is operated by a lighthouse keeper.

Prišnjak, a lighthouse on the islet of the same name, is situated only 300 m from the island of Murter, and 10 km from Kornati National Park. If you are travelling by car, head for the island of Murter and then take a boat to Prišnjak. The lighthouse is completely automated, so there is no lighthouse keeper there. It was constructed in 1886, only 15 m from the sea. The sea is abundant in fish and the lighthouse is surrounded by a pine forest which is the habitat of wild rabbits, mice and endemic lizard and slow-worm species.

Porer, a lighthouse situated on the islet of the same name, south-west of the southern cape of Istria. The distance by road from Pula to where you board the boat is 20 km. The lighthouse was constructed in 1833 on a small islet only 80 m wide. The characteristic of this islet is its underwater world with rich fish fauna and its isolation from civilisation. Water currents around the island are very strong during the day, and very brisk winds develop around the islet. The nearby islet of Fenoliga is interesting for the dinosaur footprints which are not to be missed.

Cape Zub, a lighthouse situated on the Lanterna peninsula, 13 km equidistant from Novigrad in the north and Poreč in the south. It can be reached by car. The lighthouse was built in 1872 on the edge of the sea, and nearby there are hotels, restaurants, sporting and other facilities. The peninsula itself rests between two beautiful bays with pebble beaches. The lighthouse is completely automatised.

Savudrija, a lighthouse situated on the cape of Savudrija, 9 km from the town of Umag, on the border with Slovenia. It can be reached by car. This is the northernmost and also the oldest lighthouse on the Adriatic coast, constructed in 1818, located 30 m from the edge of the sea, surrounded by hotels, restaurants and beaches. The lighthouse has a garden around it with Mediterranean vegetation, and there is a rocky beach with clear blue sea and a clean seabed which is ideal for diving.

Sušac, a lighthouse on the island of Sušac, situated 42 km south of the island of Hvar and 24 km west of the island of Lastovo. If you are travelling by car, head for the city of Split, catch a ferry to the island of Korčula and then take a boat. The lighthouse was built in 1878 on an uninhabited island with a surface area of 6 km2, 100 m above sea level, offering a view of the endless shoreline. The surrounding sea is rich in fish offering opportunities for all kinds of fishing while diving under the southern cliffs is especially attractive. The lighthouse has its own lighthouse keeper, while a shepherd also lives on the island with a flock of sheep which enjoy the special salty pasture there. There are valuable archaeological findings on Sušac, as well as various endemic bird and animal species.

Veli Rat, a lighthouse on the island of Dugi otok, 32 km (by ferry) and 9 km (by car) from the city of Zadar. If you are travelling by car, head for Zadar first, then take the ferry to Bribinje and continue by car to the lighthouse. It was built in 1849 in a dense pine forest, surrounded by beautiful bays and pebble beaches. It is considered one of the most beautiful lighthouses on the Adriatic coast. It has its own lighthouse keeper and is imbued with the scent of pine. One of the most beautiful sandy bays of the Adriatic coast, Saharun, is situated nearby (a ten-minute car ride), and the sea nearby is shallow and very attractive for underwater fishing.

Sv. Ivan na pučini, a lighthouse on the islet of Sv. Ivan, 3 km from the picturesque Istrian town of Rovinj. If you are travelling by car, head for Rovinj and take a boat from there. The lighthouse was built in 1853 and is situated on the southernmost of the 13 islands off the coast of Rovinj. It is attractive and has a beautiful underwater world. It is ideal for lovers of solitude and underwater pursuits.

Sv. Petar, a lighthouse situated on the peninsula of Sv. Petar, 1 km from the town of Makarska. It can be reached by car. The lighthouse was constructed in 1884 at a dozen or so metres from the sea, while the peninsula itself is a park-forest near one of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic coast. The relative vicinity of civilisation gives this lighthouse an ideal mix of peace and urban amenities. The Sv. Petar lighthouse has no lighthouse keeper.
